It’s fall, y’all!
We’re big fall people here at The Apothecary. This is the season for cooking up hearty meals, crafting, canning, preserving, and huddling around a cozy backyard fire. As we spend more time hanging out indoors, we find ourselves nesting and preparing for the chilly months ahead.
But before the first snowfall hits, there are a few important cleaning tasks you should check off your to-do list. We’ve compiled five things we recommend checking off for a successful hibernation!
Change out the furnace filter and get the vents cleaned.
Dust, pet hair, crumbs and that one plant pot that tipped over that you never properly cleaned up... we can’t rid ourselves of dust, but we can reduce it! With furnaces starting to kick in, it’s important to change out your furnace filter and clear out the air ducts (especially for those who have allergies). While you’re at it, clean out the dryer vent, as a lint-clogged vent can be a fire hazard.
Laundry strip those hats, mitts and gloves
Washing warm winter gear tends to sit pretty low on the priority list. That’s why it’s important to give your gloves, mitts, scarves, beanies, Buffs, balaclavas - what have you - a well-deserved hot soak in the tub. Try combining ¼ cup Borax, ¼ cup Nellie’s Oxygen Brightener, and ½ cup Nellie’s Laundry Soda in the tub for a grime-busting laundry stripper. Soak until the water cools, stirring occasionally. Once cool, drain the tub, give your clothes a squeeze, then toss in the washing machine. Set your machine to a rinse cycle with no detergent to wash everything out.
Sweep and mop under your large appliances
We all hate to see what’s been hiding under our fridge, oven, washer, and dryer, but just think about how satisfying it will feel once it’s all clean! Grab a buddy to help you pull out those appliances, and bond over how disgusting your floor really is. Who knows... maybe you’ll find a treasure!?
Clean your oven
Cleaning the oven can be a BIG chore, but it doesn’t have to be with the Refresh: Kitchen Bar! Watch Emilie clean her oven below with just a kitchen bar, a scrubber and an old toothbrush. Get it done before Thanksgiving to really impress your guests.

Wash your windows – and sills!
We need all the sunlight we can get this winter, so give those windows a wash and soak in the warmth! And don’t forget the dirt that blew through your windows when they were open all summer. We recommend a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water with some newspaper for your windows, and a cloth, a bucket of hot water and 1 tbsp of Sapadilla All Purpose Cleaner for your windowsills.
BONUS: Scrub your grout!
Did you know that oxygen brightener doesn’t just brighten clothing? Try scrubbing your tile grout with Nellie’s Oxygen Brightener and a Redecker Pot Brush or old toothbrush for a showroom-worthy kitchen and bathroom.
Now that your house is all set for the season, you can settle into the season by making a nice cup of tea and watching the leaves drop. Happy fall!
