Now, before you grab a briquette from your barbeque, it’s important to note that charcoal and activated charcoal are two very different things.

The charcoal used in food and bath & body products is activated charcoal, also known as activated carbon, which means it has been heat-treated and finely ground to increase its surface area and absorbency. Activated charcoal has been used for thousands of years for water filtration, gas purification and poisoning treatment/medicine. Activated charcoal is also known to bind to other substances and remove stains and impurities from the teeth and skin, which is why we’ve seen it show up in all sorts of products.
