
Everyone loves a thoughtful, hand-made gift, and one of our all-time favourites is DIY dried soup mixes in mason jars. These gifts can be entirely customizable with ingredients to any style of dish- it doesn't have to be soup! (Although, who doesn't love a nourishing warm bowl of happiness in the cold winter months), you can fill your jar with sweet or savory baking ingredients, one pot rice meals, chilis, and even mini spice mixes! Here are 2 of our favourites, cost-effective & low waste DIY Dried Soup Jars:
Mexican Black Bean Soup
What you'll need:
- 1 x 500ml Wide Mouth Mason Jar
- 1 1/2 Cup Dried Black Beans
- 1 1/2 Tbsp Garlic Powder
- 1 Tbsp Cumin
- 1 Tbsp Chili Powder
- 1/2 Tsp Paprika (or Smoked Paprika if you'd prefer)
- 1 Bay Leaf
Assemble your jar in this order for the most beautiful layered jar.
Add the following ingredients when cooking:
- 1/4 Yellow Onion, diced (Or 4 tbsp dried onion)
- 1 Bouillon Cube of preference
- 1 Small Chili Pepper (dried or fresh works equally as amazing!)
- 1 Red Bell Pepper, diced (optional)
- Protein of choice: Shredded Chicken, Ground Beef, Tofu or Shrimp all taste delicious! (optional)
- 1 Can of Corn (optional)
Instructions for Cooking:
- Empty jar of soup into pot, add in 6 cups of water and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to a simmer and cook until beans become soft.
- At the 1.5-hour mark, you may need to add a bit more water so that your soup is the desired thickness if too thick.
- Season with salt and pepper, taste test and add in any spices your little heart desires if more flavour is needed.
- Remove the bay leaf and chili pepper before enjoying.

Classic Chicken Noodle Soup
Ingredients:
- 1/2 Tbsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 Tsp Onion Powder
- 1 Chicken Bouillon Cube, broken up
- 1/2 Tsp Dried Rosemary
- 1/2 Tsp Dried Sage
- 1/2 Tsp Dried Thyme
- 1-1 1/2 Cup Dried Noodles of Choice
- Assemble your jar in this order for the most beautiful layered jar.
Add the following ingredients when cooking:
- 1 Carrot, diced
- 1 Celery Stalk, diced
- 1/2 Yellow Onion, diced
- 3 Cloves Garlic, minced
- Chopped Fresh Parsley
- Cubed Chicken Breast
Instructions for Cooking:
- If adding fresh garlic/onions, heat a tbsp of oil up in your large pot and sauté.
- Add carrot and celery, sauté for another 3-5 minutes.
- Add in the contents of your jar and 4 cups of water, bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until noodles are cooked through. Different styles of noodles may take longer than others to cook.
- Add in your chicken and fresh parsley, season with salt and pepper, mix and enjoy!
