How to Use Herbs to Aid a Sore Throat - Part One

Choosing lozenges for your sore throat at the grocery store may leave you with more questions than answers as you read the lengthy ingredients list, and when feeling under the weather, we know you are looking for a quick, easy, simple fix. This Herbal Licorice Lozenge recipe is extremely beginner friendly, and only takes minutes to prepare and complete, not to mention, you can grab almost all these ingredients in store!

Let's talk a little bit about the ingredients!

Licorice Root is one of the most widely consumed herbs and can be ideal for support with conditions such as sore throats, bronchitis, dry coughs, and even some gastric irritations.

Slippery Elm has been used traditionally for hundreds of years because of its mucilaginous properties, which makes it a wonderful addition to a lozenge when aiding a sore throat.

Marshmallow Root usage dates back to ancient Greece, and has countless soothing properties, making it a valuable herb to use when supporting respiratory concerns.

  • 4-8 Tbsp Honey

  2. Once simmering is complete, strain your mixture into a measuring cup and add 2 tbsp of honey for every 1/4 cup of Licorice Root tea. (8tbsp)
  3. In another bowl, mix 1/2 cup of Slippery Elm Bark powder with the Licorice & Honey mixture and combine to make a paste.
  4. Lightly sprinkle some Slippery Elm Bark powder on your cutting board before adding your paste onto the cutting board and using a rolling pin to flatten into 1/4" thick shape of your choosing.
  5. Use a lid from a bottle of choice to cut out small, lozenge-like circles and place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper to dry.
  6. Once lozenges are fully dried, transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator. (These lozenges also taste and feel amazing chilled!)
