How to Use Herbs to Aid a Sore Throat - Part Two

We're back with another DIY herbal recipe for you to keep on top of feeling your best. Not only can these lozenges be used to help support you when you have a sore throat, but these make great pastilles to take before a meal to capture all the wonderful medicinal benefits these herbs can have on your digestive system as well. These also make wonderful gifts, and the holidays are approaching! (Wink, wink!)

Let's get to know some of the herbs being used here!

This recipe is entirely customizable for you to create the perfect lozenge or herbal pastille for yourself.

Peppermint Leaf is rich in minerals and vitamins, and is an antimicrobial powerhouse, to help fight bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Not to mention, this herb provides a refreshing flavour to anything you add it to.

Sage Leaf is a herb that offers support for a large range of concerns, and holds microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Sage is a great herb to add to any routine when trying to combat a sore throat and adds a wonderful herbaceous flavour.

Licorice Root is one of the most widely consumed herbs and can be ideal for support with conditions such as sore throats, bronchitis, dry coughs, and even some gastric irritations.

Marshmallow Root usage dates back to ancient Greece, and has countless soothing properties, making it a valuable herb to use when supporting respiratory concerns.

Herbal Soft Lozenges or Pastilles

Ingredients:
  • 2 Tsp Peppermint Leaf Powder
  • 2 Tsp Licorice Root Powder
  • 2 Tsp Marshmallow Root Powder
  • 1/4 Part Fennel or Sage Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Honey or 2 Tbsp Harmonic Arts Elderberry Syrup
  • An additional 1 Tbsp Licorice Root Powder for rolling & shaping!
Instructions:
  1. In a bowl, mix Peppermint Leaf powder, Licorice Root powder, Marshmallow Root powder and Fennel/Sage powder.
  2. Add in your honey or syrup to the mixture and stir until mixture thickens to a paste.
  3. Lightly sprinkle your additional Tbsp of Licorice powder onto your cutting board or parchment paper and begin rolling your product out until it is 1/4" thick.
  4. Use a lid from a bottle of choice to cut out small, lozenge-like circles and place them on a cookie sheet lined in parchment paper to dry.
  5. Once lozenges have dried, store them in an airtight container and keep refrigerated.
