Hapazome: Nature's Palette on Fabric

$85.00
CHOOSE DATE:

Have you ever wished you could preserve the vibrant colours of a summer
garden or the patterns of a leaf’s intricate detail? Join local artist, Chantel Traub for a hands-on journey into the world of Hapazome—a sustainable, slow-craft technique that uses hammering to transfer the actual pigments and shapes of plants directly onto natural fibres.

In this beginner-friendly workshop, we move beyond synthetic dyes to explore
the alchemy of the natural world. You’ll learn how to seek out foliage for its
hidden dye potential and how to prep fabric to preserve the imprint. This is a
seasonal workshop, focusing on slow processes and the fleeting nature of
botanicals in time.

The Nitty Gritty

Duration: Around 2 hours with a 45 minute break to allow our fibres to steam.

Experience Level: No previous art or dyeing experience is required—just a curiosity for nature!

What We’ll Cover
  • The Science of Natural Colour: A brief introduction to mordants (natural
mineral salts) and how they help plant tannins "bite" into the fabric.
  • Garden Foraging 101: Which local leaves and flowers provide the best
prints? We’ll discuss how to choose the best flora for colour and detail and
    encourage experimentation!
  • The Hapazome Method: Master the art of the "contact print"—arranging,
and pounding your botanical compositions to ensure crisp, detailed results.
What You’ll Make & Take

Participants can choose between creating a square silk scarf or a framable cotton wall art piece. Each person will also take home an instructional guide to keep the journey going. **keep in mind when choosing between silk and cotton that floral prints will come out crisper on cotton while silk can have a more blurred watercolour effect.

What to Bring

All botanical materials (grown by the artist) and fabrics are
provided. However, guests are welcome to bring a small selection of their own fresh (not dried) leaves or flowers from their own gardens to experiment with. Pansies, Marigolds, Cosmos, Geraniums and other brightly coloured flowers generally lead to good results.
