The sennas are scrubby desert plants of North Africa. Senna has been used around the world for thousands of years as a laxative.
Senna encourages bowel movement by inhibiting the smooth muscles that retain stool and stimulating the smooth muscles that push stool through the intestine.
- Typical Preparations

Tea, tincture, capsules. Please note: Senna can cause intense intestinal cramping (griping) if used alone, use it with carminatives such as Ginger, Cardamom, Caraway or Coriander seed. Senna pods are a milder laxative than the leaves.

- Do not use product if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a healthcare provider prior to use if you are pregnant or nursing a baby. Discontinue use in the event of diarrhea or watery stools. Do not exceed recommended dose. Not for long-term use.

Long-term use can cause bowel dependency and deplete electrolytes especially potassium. Chronic use has also been linked to liver and kidney damage.
- To be avoided for individuals with IBS-D, IBD or intetinal obstruction. Excessive use can cause diarrhea, nausea, discoloration of urine.
